Image (1) -- Close-up
view of the left exterior wall of the engine compartment showing exterior
details. The large vent was construction entirely from stripe styrene with
quarter-round styrene trim. The panel adjacent to the vent was constructed
from sandwiched plain and scribed styrene sheets.
The engine compartment wall
were constructed with .040 inch thick styrene sheet stock.

Note: I've been building vents like this
for a long time and can relatively easily place glue the vanes in place
without guides, however for the vent on the right side of this engine pod I
will use my old method which uses guides. |

Image (3) -- Close-up
of ball-turret opening being cut into front panel of driver pod. The front
panel is 0.020 inch thick styrene sheet stock. It's much easier to cut the
circles in 0.020 thick styrene than 0.040 inch thick styrene, and since the
front panel is small and reinforcements can be hidden inside the pod the
0.020 will work fine for this section of the pod. The other walls will be
cut from 0.040 inch thick stock.. |

-- The first stage in construction of the ball -turret housing and the ball-turret. The ball-turret was constructed from a 1-1/4 inch diameter craft hardwood ball knob. The laser cannons in the ball-turret made from 1/8 inch diameter styrene tubing for the barrels and 3/16 inch diameter styrene
tubing for the tips. |

-- Close-up look down the barrels of the ball-turret. As can be seen from
this photo the bore of the barrels travels completely through the
ball-turret. I'm toying with the idea of inserting transparent florescent
acrylic rod into the barrels and placing LEDs at inside base for light
effects. |

view inside the driver pod. This photo shows the unfinished driver pod
interior and what will become the control panel. At this stage in building
the ball-turret is still removable to allow the driver pod to be painted
without the need for masking. Also the engine compartment has not been
attached to the driver pod yet and is being held in place by the miter-box
seen under it. This is just to give an idea of what the completed pod unit
will look like. There are still many details to add to both the driver pod
and engine compartment at this point. |
